Modern Woodland Landscape Design
The goal of this modern woodland landscape design was to complement the clean, contemporary architecture of the newly constructed home while creating a seamless transition into the surrounding Pacific Northwest woodland. A Japanese-inspired garden visible from the primary suite, along with a large level lawn for recreation, were key priorities. To create the signature "infinity lawn edge," we constructed a retaining wall and imported more than 500 cubic yards of soil to raise the grade by four feet.
Designing a functional driveway with generous guest parking was another priority, but it needed to complement—not dominate—the landscape. Irregular planting beds soften the large paved surface, while the distinctive stair-step layout was inspired by the tree protection fencing used during construction. Decorative score lines add texture and reinforce the home's modern architectural style.
One of the defining features of this modern woodland landscape design is the balance between contemporary architecture and the natural surroundings. Clean lines, natural stone, grasses, and native-inspired plantings create a landscape that feels refined without competing with the nearby forest. The result is a peaceful outdoor living space that reflects the beauty of the Pacific Northwest while remaining functional, timeless, and easy to enjoy throughout the seasons.
